چکیده

We present a formalism well adapted to the numerical study of the encounter of an ordinary main sequence star with a massive black hole. Symmetry considerations , the use of a well adapted moving grid and a well adapted moving frame along with integration of the partial differential equations by means of pseudo-spectral methods result in a very powerful and accurate tool. The hydro-dynamical equations are written in a moving frame which mimics the bulk of the movement of the fluid, resulting in very small relative velocities and a well suited spatial resolution throughout the calculations. Therefore, the numerical calculations are considerably simplified, smoothing in particular the Courant condition. Typical runs are performed within a few hours on a workstation with the high accuracy linked to the spectral methods. Predictions of the so-called affine are tested against this full numerical simulation.

Enhanced Tidal Disruption Rates from Massive Black Hole Binaries

“Hard” massive black hole (MBH) binaries embedded in steep stellar cusps can shrink via threebody slingshot interactions. We show that this process will inevitably be accompanied by a burst of stellar tidal disruptions, at a rate that can be several orders of magnitude larger than that appropriate for a single MBH. Our numerical scattering experiments reveal that: 1) a significant fraction of s...

Stellar Tidal Processes Near Massive Black Holes

Close tidal interactions of stars with a central massive black hole (MBH) or with other stars in the high density cusp around it can affect a significant fraction of the stellar population within the MBH radius of influence. We consider three strong processes that have the potential of modifying stellar structure and evolution there. (1) Tidal spin-up by hyperbolic star-star encounters. (2) Tid...

Tidal Scattering of Stars on Supermassive Black Holes in Galactic Centers

Some of the mass that feeds the growth of a massive black hole (BH) in a galactic center is supplied by tidal disruption of stars that approach it on unbound, low angular momentum orbits. For each star that is disrupted, others narrowly escape after being subjected to extreme tidal distortion, spin-up, mixing and mass-loss, which may affect their evolution and appearance. We show that it is lik...

Tidal Disruption of a Solar Type Star by a Super-Massive Black Hole

We study the long term evolution of a solar type star that is being disrupted by a super massive (10 M⊙) black hole. The evolution is followed from the disruption event, which turns the star into a long thin stream of gas, to the point where some of this gas returns to pericenter and begins its second orbit around the black hole. Following the evolution for this long allows us to determine the ...

Massive disk formation in the tidal disruption of a neutron star by a nearly extremal black hole

Black hole–neutron star (BHNS) binaries are important sources of gravitational waves for second-generation interferometers, and BHNS mergers are also a proposed engine for short, hard gamma-ray bursts. The behavior of both the spacetime (and thus the emitted gravitational waves) and the neutron star matter in a BHNS merger depend strongly and nonlinearly on the black hole’s spin. While there is...
